PLAY RANGERS

Play Rangers are qualified playworkers who take their skills and equipment to where the children are. Our six teams deliver active outdoor play in both urban and rural communities across Gloucestershire. Our policy is open access, so it is free to use and there is no registration. Children can come and go as they please. Our activities are targeted at 7 to 14 year olds. Under 7’s are welcome when accompanied by a parent or carer.
We operate during the school holidays from 10am to 4pm, after-school from 4pm to 6pm or at weekends for fun days and festivals. Play Rangers get out and play in all weathers and all year round, except the Christmas school holidays. Please see the chart below for where each team is currently working, or contact the Team Leader (see Contact Us page) in your local area for more information.

Things you need to know about Play Gloucestershire’s Play Rangers!
Play Gloucestershire is a registered charity, providing free Play Ranger activities from funding provided by the Big Lottery Fund Children’s Play Programme.
Our Play Ranger activities are free – there is no charge!
Our Play Rangers activities target 7-14 year olds. Under 7’s are welcome and should be accompanied by a parent or carer. We love families to join us at all our sessions.
Our Play Ranger activities are open access. This means there is no registration – children can leave the site at any time. Our Play Rangers will not stop them and will not know they have left.
We encourage children to take responsibilities for their own actions. We think this is good for them. They will be encouraged to resolve disagreement and conflict amongst themselves. We will intervene if absolutely necessary.
Play Gloucestershire believe that children need and want to take risks when they play. Our Play Rangers aim to respond to these needs by offering children stimulating, challenging environments for exploring and developing their abilities. In doing this, we aim to manage the level of risk so that children are not exposed to unacceptable risks. Our experience tells us that whilst children play outdoors they are likely to have accidents. We promote challenging play whilst trying to prevent children taking unacceptable risks. If this causes concern please come along and speak to us.
Our range of activities include active play, den building, fires, arts and crafts, informal sports and games. We encourage children to play freely and choose what they do. They do not have to do anything if they don’t want to.
Children will get wet, hot, cold, smelly (from wood smoke) muddy and dirty and need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Better to wear old play clothes than ruin your best!
Our Play Rangers will provide drinking water at all sessions. We promote healthy eating and sometimes will provide free fruit.
We believe all children have the right to play. Please talk to us if your child needs additional support to enjoy Play Rangers. We welcome disabled children & their families.
We hope you enjoy our Play Rangers as much as the 21,507 children who have visited us. And don’t forget to ‘Get Out and Play!’
